Jay Cobarrubias Internview

Hello loyal and appreciated fans, it is time for another Internview! *insert applause* This time our Intern of the week is Jay Cobarrubias. In this week’s interview I asked a ton of hard hitting questions. Some of the questions were the typical “DJ name and why?” but the real questions ranged anywhere from DJ names to spirit animals, I know, hold on to your seats for this one folks. Anyways, that is enough prefacing for today. Let’s get to the questions!

1.)Today we will start off with the old go to, “DJ name and why?”. Jay’s DJ name happens to be DJ Jizzy Jay, which, for whatever reason, reminds me of an old school rapper or maybe beat boxer. However, despite this connection my mind made, his name was actually inspired by his nickname in highschool.

2.)The next generic but important question I tackled was what times you can tune into Jay’s show and when you do, what you can expect. I found that Jay has a diverse station, playing Soul, Jazz and R&B music. Interested? I was, and if you are not convinced yet then I am gonna let you guy’s in on the secret to paradise. Its Jazz music and Rain. Hands down the best combination ever. So, being that it is the winter months in Chico, I recommend that you curl up and tune in on your tuesdays from 6-7pm.

3.)As mentioned above, Jay plays Jazz, Soul and R&B. But why? I mean I myself completely understand the choice, but for those of you who have yet to understand the wonder of all these genre’s here is an insider’s perspective of why you should get into it. Love and Emotion. The two reasons Jay chooses to play these genre’s. Its pretty simple and relatable, a recipe I find always works. According to Jay, Soul, Jazz and R&B all communicate love and emotion in a way that other genres do not and that’s why he loves them and chooses to share them with all of you.

4.)So know that we know all about Jay’s show, lets get into what he does for the station. When Jay is not doing his show he is helping the Web Design team keep the cite you are all on running. In fact Jay does internviews just like this one. But it is not all computers and interviews, on occasion he gets to make kick ass buttons that eventually make their way to all of you. My favorite job if you ask me.

5.)Before Jay got into the Web Design team he had to apply to be an intern a choice which he made in part because his girlfriend has done it before and also because it is a fun GPA boost.

6.)“How do you think the fact that KCSC is a non-commercial radio station affects the environment for the staff and overall quality of the station?” This is one of the Hard Hitters guys, but it did not stump Jay. He responded, almost immediately that he thought the environment was relaxed and really casual. He specifically brought up the fact that we only have one rule, no popular music, which makes us anything but average and always diverse. In fact the only downside that he could come up with was that the equipment we use is outdated, a small price to pay for getting to share music with all of you guys.

7.)Jay, Like all of the interns, is passionate about what he does and wants to improve for all of his listeners. Some of his goals include finding new music, having someone call in, which all of you can help with, and having more interviews on the show.

8.)Alright, The last and most exciting question, What is DJ Jizzy Jay’s spirit animal? The answer is not typical. It is not a lion, or tiger or bear(oh my), no, Jay’s spirit animal is a Koala. The cute and fuzzy bears that eat Eucalyptus. Yes. You did read that right and you read it here first! As always, KCSC loves you guys and tune in!!

What’s Your Major?

Nutrition and food science. But I am really interested in psychology, I may change it.

Favorite Genre Currently?

Old school hip hop, like A Tribe Called Quest. It’s so perfect to vibe with.

If you could see any musician alive or dead who would you see?

City and Color because it’s emotional. I get really emotionally invested in all of his songs so it would be really cool to see him get up there and sing them live.

What are your favorite type of shoes?

Converse because they’re comfortable

Do you do any art?

I wouldn’t brag about it to other people… but I do water color sometimes. And I like to do sketches of things. I would get in trouble in class all the time because I was scribbling doodles.

Do you have any song that is currently stuck on repeat?

Electric Relaxation by A Tribe Called Quest

Cherry Bomb by Fringe Character

What’s your DJ name?

DJ Metanoia

It means to always grow and change

What kind of music do you like to play on your show?

A lot of basement. It’s like screamo almost but like soft. Kind of like pop punk

What is your spirit animal?

It’s a butterfly. I took a quiz so it’s official.

What’s your favorite color?

Yellow. It’s a happy color

What’s my biggest struggle on the radio show?

I get nervous before I talk sometimes so I stutter. I know not many people are listening but it still freaks me out. I getting a lot better though and I feel more comfortable now.

Favorite candy?

I don’t really eat candy because I don’t really like sweet stuff I like bitter. So I would have to say dark chocolate, if that’s even considered a candy

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Honestly, I think I would go to Australia. It would be really cool to go there. But anywhere in the world really. I went to a hostel in San Francisco and I got inspired to go to all of them all over the world by the French man that was working there.

Anything else you want to say?

Thanks mom
for listening. I appreciate it 🙂

Internview with Mathieu Mai

Welcome back KCSC listeners, This week’s Internview is with one of our own board of directors Mathieu Mai!

DJ name?

So let’s get to the basics, Mathieu’s DJ name is DJ Dong. The Dong is used as currency in Vietnam, so Mathieu uses it as a play on words because of his Vietnamese background. In our interview he also added that the motivation behind the name is in part because Dong is just funny to say, and I speak for all of us with a middle school sense of humor when I say I agree

When can you listen and what to expect:

So what is DJ Dong’s show all about? Well I will tell you. When listening to his show you should come into it expecting a wide range of Hip Hop music with some other genres, like Electronic, sprinkled in to keep the selection diverse. One of the artists that Mathieu highly recommends and can be heard on his show is Father. So if you’re familiar with Father or want to hear some of his stuff definitely tune in to Mathieu’s show on Friday’s at 12 pm.

Recommended artist?

As was stated above one of Mathieu’s recommended artist was Father. So, If enjoy modern Hip Hop and cannot wait to check him out on Fridays, here are some songs that Mathieu has picked out for all of you to check out.

    • Look At Wrist
    • Why Don’t You
    • Vamp
    • Fuck up the Sheraton

What does Mathieu do at the Station?

In addition to sharing great music with us on Friday’s, Mathieu is also on the Board of Directors who help keep the radio station running. However this role was not an expected one for Mathieu, he originally only joined the radio station because he heard KCSC playing Outcast while they were tabling on campus. He, having a love for the artist, was prompted to get involved with KCSC. His passion eventually grew as his internship went on and now he is busy working to get the radio station back to it’s former glory while setting up a strong foundation for all the future students who get involved.

What program is Mathieu involved in?

Mathieu is on the Board of directors and more specifically he is the Director of Productions. So he is responsible for all the video that you see on the website. Some of which feature local artists from our own campus. In summary, he helps give the local artists a platform to share music with all of you, our listeners. However this awesome cause was not actually how Mathieu ended up working with productions, he actually got into this great program because of his background in editing from his High School days.

Opinion on the Non-Commercial status of the radio station?

As a B.O.D. (Board of Director) Mathieu had knowledge of the inner workings of the station. So with this perspective he views the status of the radio station as a bit less professional than other college radio stations. We are not counting or relying on our viewers (although you are all deeply appreciated) so KCSC does not have the pressures that other radio stations do. However, Mathieu does not think this lack of pressure should affect the quality of the station and because of that he is working really hard to give our listeners an even better experience. On a positive note, Mathieu does think that KCSC’s casual atmosphere allows for a lot of enthusiasm and passion from the students involved.

What does Mathieu do outside of KCSC?

Along with being a B.O.D.  and having a show on Friday, Mathieu also mixes music on the side and is investing in turntables to further practice his hobby. His interest in mixing came from his father, who used to mix and actually DJ’d shows at his age. Mathieu also works as a DJ/Hype man as well. In other words he lives and breathes music.

KCSC is a Non-Commercial radio station, so listeners are greatly valued in all numbers. Mathieu averages about five listeners, but the highest number of listeners he has gotten reached the double digits, eleven to be exact and Mathieu was excited.

Words for the listeners?

We here at KCSC love our listeners and Mathieu is no exception, so his choice words to all of you who tune in are (roughly)  “Thanks for listening, I know that there many other avenues for you to listen to your own music, so it means alot that you all would take the time to listen to mine”.

That concludes this Internview, thanks for reading and listening and remember to tune in Friday’s at 12pm!
